Matt and Nick captured worldwide attention when they created a unique same-sex Barbie wedding set for their eight-year old niece’s birthday. This is the story behind it all; one that celebrates love, equality, and family, and shows how one small gesture can spiral into something that sparks change.
“We were already engaged and we wanted to give our niece (who was to be a flower girl at our wedding, along with her little sister) a special toy that she’d love, but also that reflected our wedding and our bond with our nieces; when we couldn’t find what we wanted, we made our own same-sex Barbie Wedding Set and I later posted it on my social media accounts. It went viral, and caught the eyes of Mattel.
“We then went to Mattel’s headquarters in Los Angeles where we were welcomed into the Barbie family. Stay turned for what we are working on!”
“We married at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch where we exchanged vows in front of 160 guests. We toasted the LGBTQ freedom fighters and allies that helped make marriage equality the law of the land.
“We were the first same-sex couple to get married at the resort and tasked event experts at Juliet Le Fleur, Glamour & Woods, and Southwest Teepee to surprise us on the day with their own special décor details. In fact, we left all the details up to the wedding vendors and had no idea what to expect. The first time we saw any of it was when we walked down the aisle on our wedding day. ”
