In a Nutshell

Jason Mitchell Kahn is the resident wedding planner at Shiraz and is author of Getting Groomed: The Ultimate Wedding Planner for Gay Grooms, the first wedding planner of its kind for gay grooms. He heads up a fantastic team of designers, florists, world-renowned catering and production experts who work with to-be-weds on both sides of the Atlantic. Whether it’s an intimate candlelit outdoor wedding or a multi-day Château extravaganza, weddings planned by Shiraz promise to be flawless, elegant and sophisticated affairs where no detail is overlooked.

Jason and his team help clients invent new traditions whilst advising on etiquette, family involvement and ceremony staging. In just over two years, Shiraz has planned more than 50 weddings, most of which have been same-sex marriages. Get in touch and see how they can help you.

Why do you want to work with GWG couples?
Shiraz Events is a gay owned and managed firm and the gay community has been a wonderful component of the firm’s success from its inception. We love working with stylish, sophisticated, worldly couples who want to create a detailed, beautiful celebration for their friends and family.

What is your approach to weddings?
Every wedding is like a story that develops over time. We usually start with finding the perfect venue. This process often takes a couple of weeks and allows us to get to know the clients, learn more about their personalities and what they like. The next step is to establish design and creative direction, which is often dictated by a selected venue.

First we decide on a colour story, then we create design proposals with layouts, floorplans and moodboards in consultation with our couples, and we refine these until they’re perfect. At Shiraz, we think it’s extremely important to get the design right during proposal stages as it’s much easier and cheaper to change a colour scheme or a piece of furniture on paper, rather than making costly changes further down the line.

Unlike corporate brands that often have brand guildelines, colour scheme, fonts and design style, couples don’t have these and need to establish their own brand identity, which can be a stressful experience if it isn’t handled correctly. We guide them through the creative process by presenting them with beautiful concepts and although the final look is often a compromise or a blend of the couple’s ideas, it’s never a compromise from a design perspective as it’s carefully thought through and finished by a Shiraz designer -and whether it’s a floral design, tablescape, cutlery, glassware, lighting or a mode of transport, every element will be discussed with the couple and designed to perfection.

What do you love about what you do?
Creative freedom and the expression through art, colour, food, interiors and, most importantly, through people, because they are the ultimate source of inspiration.
