Visitors come to Kefalonia for the romance, for the breathtakingly beautiful views, the mountains, the forests and the beaches. And where better to stay than the Emelisse.
Hidden out of sight, among the cedar and cypress trees, the Emelisse hotel quietly overlooks Emplisis Bay. And, although it has 64 rooms, it has plenty of hideaways throughout its grounds so you can get cosy in your own private space or lounge around the communal infinity pool gazing lazily across the bay to the mountains in the distance.
A Design & Art Hotel
Space consultant Sophocles Maraveyas is responsible for the interior design of Emelisse; within you’ll find a combined an ambience of serenity with original pieces of furniture and local architecture elements. Teak wood furnishings painted in subtle shades, fill the rooms and pictures from artwork photographer Tatiana Karapanagioti hang on the walls. Dine in its indoor restaurant or outside at Votsalo, the Emelisse’s open kitchen Mediterranean restaurant.
There are many magnificent beaches on Kefalonia and the closest is just 100m far from the Emelisse’s reception. The pinup, though, is Myrtos Beach – a long ribbon of white pebble backed by vertical limestone cliffs; it’s certainly worth visiting for a day of relaxation.
Picture-postcard pastel port villages, exquisite seafood and gorgeous secluded spots that are perfect for honeymooners, Kefalonia was the location for the filming of Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and is the largest of the Ionian Islands.
LOCATION & ACTIVITIES
Fiskardo, just 15 minutes away from the Emelisse, is Kefalonia’s northernmost town. It is a picturesque port and fishing centre and it’s worth taking a stroll down just for to see the gorgeous pastel coloured Venetian buildings and fishing boats, taking time to explore the side streets to find the hidden tavernas adn cafes. Fiskardo is also an active ferry port with boats to Ithaki and Lefkada.
The Emelisse itself lies just 1h 15m away from Cephalonia airport and the ferry port of Sami is just 50 minutes away. It is 60klm from Poros port, your destination port if you travel from Kyllini. It takes less than an hour to go to the capital of the island, Argostoli.
A bit of history
In 1953, and earthquake destroyed much of Kefalonia’s older buildings – all except for those in Fiskardo which absorbed much of the tremor through the bed of limestone it sits on. A small museum at the top of the harbour is worth a visit to see how Fiskardo has changed over the years.
Explore neighbouring bays and lagoons by boat – you can hire your own or take one of the boat trips available from the harbour and head for one of the deserted islands for the day.
Melissani Lake in Karavomylos – well worth a visit.
The Venetian Castle
The village of Assos, which is 20 minutes from Fiskardo, is without a doubt one of the most attractive places on Cephalonia; with its crumbling ruins, narrow backstreets and multitude of seaside cafes, it is a great place to sit and relax and watch the world go round. A strip of land connects Assos to a peninsular upon which is a majestic Venetian fortress – a designated a National Heritage Site.
The Dafnoudi Trail
The enchanting walk down the narrow and windy trail to Dafnoudi Beach is truly beautiful. The track takes you through a forest of Olive and Cypress trees and a gorgeous herb scented valley which leads down to Dafnoudi.
