“During my long walk to freedom, I had the rare privilege to visit Londolozi. There I saw people of all races living in harmony amidst the beauty that mother nature offers.”Nelson Mandela
The root of the word Londolozi is the Zulu word for protect and means “protector of all living things” – an ambitious conservation ethic that Londolozi embraces in its sensitivity to the natural world. The reserve is internationally recognised for its far-sighted and progressive management of land and wildlife rehabilitation as well as productive community involvement.

A Londolozi safari is about engaging all the senses and participating in the journey, so that you come away charged, enlightened and ready for the next adventure.

The Animals

Breeding herds of elephant and buffalo roam throughout the Londolozi area, while white rhino and lion concentrations are amongst the highest recorded on the African continent.

However, it is the truly remarkable relationship which has developed over three decades between wild free ranging leopards and ranger and trackers which makes Londolozi world famous. There is no disputing that viewing the leopards of Londolozi is one of life’s truly treasured experiences.

Cuisine

At Londolozi, superb cuisine is considered an essential part of the experience and a vital component of our philosophy. Much of the day revolves around specifically crafted culinary delights – morning morsels on the game drive, a fortifying breakfast, lunch and indulgent high tea before the next game drive and its sundowner treats and lastly, the grand finale, a traditional fireside banquet or a private dinner.

The choice of ingredients reflects Londolozi’s efforts to establish the right relations with the planet. Every ingredient is chosen with care, favouring home grown organic produce, free range game and herbs from our kitchen garden to create dishes that are irresistibly delicious and healthy. Our selection of seafood is guided by the Southern African Sustainable Seafood Initiative and the number of imported ingredients is kept to a minimum.

Londolozi’s recipes are a source of great pride as many have been handed down through the Varty family or were created in the Londolozi kitchen.

Honeymoon Experiences

By combining pristine service and meditative luxury with an authentic wilderness adventure, Londolozi has set out to ensure that the honeymoon experience becomes the standout defining moment that will live in the hearts of newlyweds for the rest of time.

Pride of place is given to the game viewing vehicle, a one of a kind sturdy short wheelbase Land Rover, bedecked with a sumptous safari couch for two – the newly weds chariot awaits, along with a dedicated ranger ensuring not only supreme flexibility in game drive arrangements – midnight or midday are equally possible – but also opportunity for extraordinary discoveries. The small vehicle can explore the hidden dells and secret places of Londolozi with great agility.

Private Granite Suites, play host to the couple – each suite is situated along the Sand River and includes an elegant sitting room and bedroom, glass encased en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, heated swimming pool and, quite extraordinarily, a private outdoor river-view bath. The bath, spacious enough for two and positioned so that you feel the warm sun on your shoulders or see the moon river reflected at your feet, is in itself the ultimate honeymoon accessory.

In this intimate setting the newlyweds are invited to be co-creators of their safari experience, venturing beyond the classic interpretive game drive to explore bush yoga, meditative walks, animal tracking, champagne sunsets and full moon bush dinners, as well as the opportunity for wilderness couples massages on an elevated look out deck deep in the heart of the reserve.

The Private Granite Suites offer an extraordinary experience for couples. Bold, inspiring materials mirror the extrusion of granite rocks that flank the camp while conveying the raw essence of Africa. The emphasis is on space, light and privacy while blurring the barrier between inside and out. A seamless integration with nature is achieved with large doors and windows all opening directly onto the Sand River.

LOCATION & ACTIVITIES

Londolozi is situated on the Sand River in the very heart of the Sabi Sand Game Reserve. This reserve in turn forms part of the Greater Limpopo Transfrontier Park, a vast and growing area, currently covering 6 million acres and incorporating the famous Kruger National Park. This rich, wild wonderland assures exceptional game drives and a true wilderness experience.

In the Footsteps of Nelson Mandela

On visiting Londolozi in 1992 Mandela saw the vision that was being lived by the employees and management in collaboration with nature.

“During my long walk to freedom, I had the rare privilege to visit Londolozi. There I saw people of all races living in harmony amidst the beauty that mother nature offers” – Nelson Mandela

It is in this light that the Freedom’s Way art installation has been completed to draw attention to the values which Nelson Mandela put forward to our nation and to compliment the Londolozi village walk which all guests are encouraged to experience.

Yoga

Yoga means ‘union’ in Sanskrit and refers to the bringing together of mind, body and spirit. Asanas, also a Sanskrit word, refers to the poses and postures developed in India to join mind and body in spiritual awareness.

At Londolozi we have added the powerful elements of nature to the yoga experience, using both the natural energy of the location and tailor made Asanas, to create a yoga form which is suitable for beginners and intermediate practitioners.

You are free to schedule a private yoga session in your room or in the shade of your deck. Alternatively, daily classes are held on the yoga deck beside the pool at Varty Camp. Please ask your camp manager for class times. We look forward to you joining us to greet the sun and strengthen the vital life of the body.

Massage

Massage has been practiced as a healing therapy for centuries and it is even considered by some to be the oldest form of medical practice. The proven powers of massage, to provide release from stress and to promote increased blood flow and healing, make it a wonderful addition to any holiday.

The massage room at Londolozi Life was designed by a holistic therapist to create a space in harmony with the elements, ensuring a meditative experience that quietens the mind, rejuvenates energy and creates inner balance.

Therapies include Swedish and Thai massage, Aromatherapy and Reiki healing. All therapies are available in either our massage room, in the privacy of your suite or out in the wilderness.

Bush Walks

Suitable for the beautiful balmy bushveld days in May, June and July; there is nothing like walking in a winter wilderness. Drift down a game trail into a dry riverbed. Feel the crisp morning rhythm of Africa with each step on the winding path as you let nature captivate you in her essence. There is no vehicle, no noise and no distractions. This is when nature speaks to you.

Bush Breakfast & Adventure Picnics

Imagine reclining in a comfortable chair surrounded by 6 million acres of African wilderness. This is the adventure picnic and bush breakfast experience, reminiscent of a bygone era when the highlight of any winter morning, after hours of walking, was the “Hunter’s Breakfast”. There is no reason to rush back to camp for breakfast when you can savor gourmet salmon and scrambled eggs with your feet in the sand on the banks of a river enjoying a balmy winter’s morning.

Sleep Out

Cradled in the branches of a 1000 year old Ebony tree you sleep out under a clear, starlit winter sky in awe of an endlessly vast universe. In the silence you can enjoy nature’s nocturnal orchestra and as the dawn chorus breaks, a golden sunrise lights up the phragmites reeds along the beautiful water course of the Sand River. The sleep out experience is an essential reconnection to the divinity of nature.

Tracking

The ancient art of tracking has been uniquely preserved at Londolozi. The combined wisdom of the Londolozi tracking team spans over 200 years of tracking experience. Our guests, during winter, are privileged to be able to witness this ancient art. On foot in search of the big cats, as well as Rhino and Buffalo…downwind… in silence… not moving a muscle and in very close proximity, is an experience which demands all your attention and which leaves you with indelible memories. Winter is the perfect time to pursue Africa’s most alluring wildlife; whilst in the presence of a master tracker applying an ancient art, miles from any Land Rover.

Birding

The birdlife at Londolozi represents a magic of diversity in perpetual motion and offers the visitor an entirely new frontier in wilderness engagement. A wide array of sunbirds seeking nectar from the flowering aloes is winter’s gift to the discerning birder, not to mention the other 450 species which abound in these landscapes. Many fine ornithologist guides reside at Londolozi.

Astronomy Lectures

Have you ever been introduced to the wonderment of the great universe? Latest pictures from the Hubble telescope open up an entirely new world of discovery which tells us of endless space beyond comprehension. At Londolozi the rangers are trained to take you on a mystical late night journey of reflection and introspection. On a cold, clear winter’s night, looking at the stars whilst holding a warm mug of hot chocolate makes for a truly memorable evening.

Campfires – Storytelling – Red Wine

Campfires, storytelling, red wine and good company are the hallmark of any winter safari. Coming from a long line of storytellers, Londolozi’s history is steeped in the tradition of campfire yarns told late into the night. In each of the 5 exclusive camps you can hear the whispers of our ancestors and embodied in our history, are the legends and myths of the mysteries and adventures of safari. Each camp has its own spirit and each has its own campfire which awaits you.
