Wedding Dilemmas: One Couple, Two Styles -How to Incorporate Both

Opposites attract, so the saying goes. So how do you style your wedding if your tastes are the polar opposite? Celebrity wedding planner, Liz Taylor of the Taylor Lynn Corporation, shares her expertise as she reveals her five top tips to harmonising conflicting styles at your wedding.

1. Define Your Style

“When I begin to work with a new couple, my starting point is always to uncover what makes them unique – separately and together. Two opposing styles can unite harmoniously. A mish mash of many is confusing and complicated. Only when I’m clear on each person’s likes and dislikes can I begin to create a day that unites them.”

2. Find Common Ground

“Our interpretation of a person’s ideas can be wildly different to the reality. Whether it’s social media or a physical mood board that you can both feed into, a visual tool will help you shape your ideas together. It’s also a great way to identify any common ground that you can build a cohesive theme around.

“Look at the bigger picture, too. Identifying any overarching ideas that define your relationship. Perhaps you met on Halloween? Share a love of a certain book, television series or film? I’ve created spectacular rooms based on anything from Penny Dreadful to Back to the Future.Wedding Dilemas Incorporate Both Your Styles Skull Taylor Lynn Coorporation via Gay Wedding Guide 1 - Wedding Dilemmas: One Couple, Two Styles -How to Incorporate Both

3. Ring the Changes

“Marriage is not about compromise; it’s about working together. So, what better place to start than on your wedding day? There are bound to be elements of the day that you have strong ideas about, visa versa for your partner.

“If your heart is set on a romantic coastal ceremony, then perhaps you won’t mind retreating to a rustic barn for the reception.
List out your ‘must haves’, ‘nice to haves’ and ‘definitely nots’, then decide the details together.”

4. Unite in Décor

Décor is where opposing ideas can combine to great effect. I’ve created memorable centrepieces out of everything from shoes to hairbrushes, like these which mix traditional and whimsical styling – enchanted toadstools nestling amongst gingham and meadow flowers.

Colour can be a unifying theme within décor. That’s if you can decide on one hue, of course.

Another tip is to use space creatively to incorporate something for each personality. If one is quiet and minimalist and the other showy and romantic, keep everything at eye level simple but invest in a huge canopy of flowers to cover the entire ceiling.

5. Celebrate Your Differences and Run with It

A wedding can be a melting pot of ideas that combine to create something truly unique.

If one is rock chick and the other romantic, then toughen up your gorgeous wedding or bridesmaid dresses with leather jackets and biker boots. Or wear totally different outfits, but then make a feature of that – creating wedding cakes that mimic what you each wore and repeat motifs throughout the day.

Remember some of the most creative and memorable events come from clashing ideas together. A 1980s neon masquerade ball? Why not! A Great Gatsby circus festival? Of course. It’s your day, after all.
