What Makes Us Unique

In a nutshell

Firstly I will suggest that we have a phone chat so I can explain how our process works in full and you can share any ideas you have about the kind of outfit you are looking for. I am Shaz Riley and I am the founder of The Butch Clothing Company, I always see clients personally face to face or via Skype. When you visit our consultation space to design and purchase your perfectly fitted bespoke suit, I personally will take your measurements and guide you through your design choices including fabric and linings, suit attributes & accessories. Ensuring the fit and style are perfect for you.

If you opt for our Skype consultations it works in exactly the same way as a face to face except your measurements are taken by a friend or your partner even your Mum or your Aunty but all under my watchful eye.
After the consultation I place your order with my fantastic team of our bespoke tailors and your paper and then fabric patterns are cut and your suit is beautifully handmade.

Why do you want to work with LGBTQ+ couples?

For me as a gay women the company was born from my own negative experiences of trying to purchase a male style suit. So my USP here is definitely that I have lived similar if not the same experiences as my clients. I get what its like to walk into the men's section of a department store and and to be greeted with little enthusiasm much less confusion, worse if they judge your gender incorrectly at the outset.

Then if you do manage to find a suit in a shop you face the fit crisis, normally if it fits on the chest the jacket is way to long, the shoulders make you look like an American football player and the trouser if they fit in the waist are unwearable due to leg length and a low hanging crotch. Heterosexual tailors are often more friendly but its often very difficult for them to tailor for a Butch woman, they often want to feminise the suits. Here at the Butch Clothing Company, we get it, because we live it and our clients understand that.

What is your creative approach to weddings?

Running The Butch Clothing Company for the last 13 years I have realised that weddings don’t have rules or take set paths, weddings are personal, they are part of the couples identity, their chance to show the world who they are. That’s where we come in, not every woman as we know, wants to wear a white wedding dress. But it is always crucial we remain our authentic selves and for many of us that means wearing a masculine style suit or even components of.

Now that could be a 3 piece suit, a two piece, a jacket with shorts or jeans, a waistcoat with trousers, the combinations are endless. You can choose to accessorise with cravats or ties or bow ties.
You can wear velvet or linen or tartan or tweed or traditional wool. It can be flamboyant in colour, it can be traditional in greys or blacks or morning suits, you can wear a stunning cream suit. Its about taking the things you love most about your own style & your colour choices and creating a look for your big day in which you will feel a million dollars and in garments that you will want to wear, in all their elements, again and again in all years ahead.

What do you love about what you do?

I love how when clients start a consultation with me they are usually very nervous and apprehensive, a life time of negative purchasing experiences makes them fear that this experience will leave them with garments that wont fit or suit them. But as we get into the consultation they start to embrace colour, fabric choices, style that works for them, all new and refreshing experiences and when they leave me they are beyond excited about their suits and when they come, often anxiously, for their fittings they are delighted with the results of a beautifully made and fitted suit. Its joyous for me every time.

What is included in the wedding package?

For our wedding clients they usually purchase a 3 piece suit, a shirt, pocket square and cravat, tie or bow tie. Often with cufflinks and a money clip. But we sell individually, we are happy to create a package price if thats what a client requires
