In a Nutshell
Steeped in history and dating back more than 600 years, the grade II listed Mercure Southampton Dolphin Hotel is one of the oldest wedding venues in Southampton, and the oldest hotel in the city.
A Literary Wedding Venue
First built in 1550, the Mercure Southampton Dolphin Hotel has played host to many of literary legends. William Shakespeare and his company reportedly performed plays in the hotel’s yard; Thomas Hardy, referred to it in his novel The Trumpet Major; and Jane Austen danced at Assembly Balls (organised by Florence Nightingale’s mother) twice here – once to celebrate her 18th birthday! Now you can celebrate your wedding day here, pledging your vows in the Jane Austen Suite and enjoying a delicious meal and evening reception in the hotel’s beautiful event spaces.
ELEGANT INTERIORS
Beautifully refurbished to create an elegant, contemporary feel, whilst retaining some of its most striking original features, including the original beams in the stables’ rooms and the huge curved bay windows at the front, the hotel capitalises on its historic charm without detracting from modern-day luxury.
The Team
From the very first day you make your enquiry, you will be assigned an in-house wedding planner to create bespoke packages and wedding menus to meet your specific wedding requirements. Able to help with the minutest of details, they will work hard to make your experience magical, with minimal fuss and maximum enjoyment.
We use our collective experience in managing weddings to help our wedding couples envisage what their big day will look like here and love to see the wedding develop from a mere idea in the couple's minds, into a magical day that they will never forget. Freya Cleary-Long, Wedding Coordinator.
