Loved by both couples and guests, frosting-free wedding cakes are becoming a real trend at weddings – from delicious chocolatey layers to floral decorations, we’ve put together our top 10 naked wedding cakes for you to enjoy.
And we asked Claire Bush from Sweet Sugar Sixpence to tell us more about the increasing popularity of naked cakes at weddings…
“Naked and Semi-Naked cakes have been growing in popularity over the last few years. Largely, because the overall wedding trends have been vintage and rustic.”
“They can also be a budget-friendly option“, she explains “although I would be wary of anyone selling a naked cake very cheaply – there is still a lot of work that goes into them.”
“A cake decorated with fresh fruit berries or chocolate is very appetising and I think this appeals to couples, especially those choosing to serve their cake as dessert.”
“As far as trends go, we are now moving away from the messy icing, piled up look and couples, whilst still choosing a semi-naked look but with a much neater finish, some colour in the buttercream and with elements like flowers, geometric shapes and gold leaf.”

Any theme naked wedding cakes
“We are looking at couples not concerning themselves with ‘fashion’ and choosing a theme that is true to them – I’m very excited for this variety and want to spread the word that a naked cake can fit any theme – you just have to get creative!”
“In terms of versatility, the list is endless! Obviously, the flavour of the cake is an option – this can have an impact on the overall look of the cake, a light victoria sponge looks great with icing sugar, strawberries and pretty blooms whilst a rich dark chocolate cake looks spectacular adorned with more chocolate, nuts and metallic elements.”
“I like to mix and match tiers too, so you could choose to have just one or two tiers naked/semi-naked and the others fully covered in a textured buttercream or fondant.”
